Artist Statement

So, guys, we did it, we reached a quarter of a million subscribers, 250,000 subscribers and still growing the fact that we’ve reached this number in such a short amount of time is just phenomenal, I’m-I’m just amazed. Thank you all so much for supporting this channel and helping it grow. I-I love you guys… You guys are just awesome.   No, but in all seriousness, we reached the end of the semester – the end of an era for all of us, especially those of us that have one more semester left in high school, before heading off to college. So, for those who haven’t been paying attention this entire time, my name is Alex Lucas. I currently go to Regiopolis Notre-Dame, and I’m 17 years of age. I was born on May 4th, 2001, so obviously, a born Star Wars fan. I share my love for the franchise with my family, but most notable with my mother. I also enjoy other fandoms, for example, Doctor Who, Shadowhunters, and Sherlock Holmes, the Avengers franchise, and iZombie. My father got me into Doctor Who when it got its reboot when Christopher Eccleston was cast as the 9th Doctor in 2005. These fandoms have an influence on my art and are definitely present if you know how to look for it.

I make art for the enjoyment of it, since it’s one of the few outlets I had, and still have, during my high school career, since I don’t have many friends, nor people I regularly talk to. Many well-established figures in movies, pop-culture, and YouTube inspire me to do what I do. My art doesn’t really represent a specific issue/message, but rather how I perceive different things, such as representing me not fitting in with other crowds of people, thus rendering and labelling me as a social outcast. I usually plan out what I want to do first, and shape and form it as I go. I usually incorporate different images as well, such as in my digital painting assignment. This may seem like an obvious point to add, but all media art assignments are done on Photoshop. No set material is necessary.

There are some other questions people may ask, so I’ll answer them now. First question – “What is your favourite medium to work with? Why?” I have two favourite mediums – Photoshop and acrylic painting. Photoshop is easy to work with and even easier to access. Acrylic painting is fun when it’s not a lot of work to do. Second question – “What was your favourite art piece that you’ve made?” I would say that my digital painting assignment is my most favourite, due to the flexibility of it, and it allows people to express themselves in the purest form. Third question – “What do you like best about what you do?” I like my talent, and my unique way of coming about different subject matter, as it’s different from everyone else in the class. Fourth question – “What do you mean when you say that a piece has turned out really well?” To me, I would say that a piece has turned out really well when it looks extremely well made, and it’s submitted on time before the actual due date. Fifth question – “Is there a pattern in the way you plan? Select materials and images? In the way, you use colour, texture or light?” I say that select materials, images, and themes emerge across all my work, due to it all having to do with sci-fi and pop-culture. Finally, but not least, the last question – “What is your favourite colour? Do the qualities of this colour apply to your work?” My favourite colour is Tardis Blue. This colour represents, to me, new adventures, unopened doors, and a feeling of excitedness/wonder. These qualities tie into my work a bit, with wonder being a major part of it all.

Well, that’s all I got. There were a lot of ups and downs during my high school career, but I’m going to make the most of the remaining 6 months, leading up until June… after all, that’s when #PTII2019 drops. See you then. 😉
